Storing and Freezing Gluten-Free Bread

Lo! If  you’re an accustomed bread eater, but new to gluten-free, the storing and freezing of your new-found gluten-free love will actually follow the same principles as you’re used to.

“Excellent!” you say…”So, what are those principles?” Well, we have them here…

STORE the amount you’d like for immediate use in an airtight container.  This may be kept on the counter (at room temperature), or stored in the refrigerator.

Slicing before freezing makes it easier to recuperate for sandwiches!

You may want to pre-slice the remainder of this loaf (or if you’re saving it all – the whole thing!) for convenient use later on. FREEZE this remainder in an airtight container. It can be frozen whole (uncut) as well, and should also go in an airtight bag. This will keep the loaf interminably.

How you REVIVE the bread depends on how you stored it in the freezer:

>>If it’s already sliced, you can reconstitute it in the microwave (put a damp towel around the bread to keep in the moisture), or put it directly in the toaster.

>>If it’s a full, unsliced loaf, put it in the oven (pre-heated to 350F) with a water-dampened top for about 10 to 15 minutes. Wetting it directly will, again, make sure it’s moist while it warms and crispens again.

EAT it as your heart desires! Make a sandwich.  Batter fish or chicken by crumbing it. Simply toast, and top with jam! ‘Tis yours…Enjoy!

  1. how long can I freeze gluten free bread safely

    • Hi Margo, thanks for the comment. Generally, we recommend 6 months as the maximum time to freeze gluten-free bread. We did just have a customer tell us he recently ate a loaf of GF bread that had been frozen for over 4 years, with no ill effect! Of course, that is if you can resist eating it that long!

    • Freezing simply prolongs the lifespan of the bread. We bake with natural ingredients, and don’t add the preservatives many other commercially-baked breads use to keep them on the grocery shelves so long. So with our goods, as well as when you bake a fresh loaf of bread at home, storing the bit in the freezer you plan to eat later will preserve its freshness until then. Hope this helps!
